Join Dr. Michael Gillette, noted bioethicist, and your colleagues from across Maryland for a highly interactive day focused on autonomy, paternalism and the ethics of respecting resident choice. Topics will include:

  • A framework for identifying, analyzing and resolving ethical issues
  • Concepts of autonomy and paternalism, including discussions of the dignity of risk, staff responsibility and aging in place, as well as community values vs. individual desires
  • Facing the multi-faceted ethical conflict between an individual’s right to make potentially dangerous decisions, a family’s desire to control services, and staff’s obligation to protect individuals from harm
  • Case studies and real-world situations that occur in a variety of settings

Partners from Whiteford Taylor Preston will weigh in on legal considerations and Chaplains and Spiritual Life professionals with LeadingAge Maryland members will discuss the role of Ethics Committees.
