NEWS & NOTES

November 10, 2017

Diversity

Race to Lead

One might think that the not-for-profit sector would be leading the way in more closely representing the racial and ethnic diversity of the U.S. in its board and staff leadership. However, the percentage of people of color in the top staff leadership role has remained under 20% even as the country and the not-for-profit workforce have become more diverse.

To explore this further, the Building Movement Project conducted a Nonprofits, Leadership, and Race survey.  There is broad agreement that the lack of diversity in nonprofit leadership is a problem. And, the findings from over 4,000 respondents are quite interesting as they challenge some of the common assumptions the sector makes in attempting to increase diversity, inclusion and equity.

The report Race to Lead: Confronting the Nonprofit Racial Leadership Gap is an important read. Let’s see if there are ways, that by working together, we can create some change and increase the diversity of leaders in our organizations that provide supports and services to older adults.
