The Brain-Body Connection: Movement, & Memory - A Focus on Dual Tasking

Research shows that dual tasking can stimulate neural connections, promote neuroplasticity, and help maintain cognitive and physical health as we age. During this session/workshop we will discover how engaging both the body and brain simultaneously can boost memory, sharpen focus, and support healthy aging. This session explores the neuroscience behind dual tasking, highlights the benefits of physical activity on cognitive health, and introduces simple, effective exercises that combine movement with mental tasks. Participants will leave with practical tools and insights to incorporate brain-body strategies into wellness routines—for themselves and those they serve.

Objectives:

  1. Explore & understand the Neuroscience of Dual Tasking: Explain how the brain processes simultaneous cognitive and physical activities, emphasizing pathways related to memory, attention, and motor control.
  2. Demonstrate the Impact of Movement on Cognitive Health: Present research on how physical activity, especially dual tasking, supports brain health, memory, and may reduce cognitive decline.
  3. Introduce Practical and Functional Dual-Task Exercises: Introduce practical movement and memory activities suitable for wellness programs to enhance cognitive and physical engagement.
  4. Empower Participants to Promote Brain-Body Integration Strategies: Equip participants with tools to advocate for movement and memory integration in daily routines to support holistic well-being and successful aging.

Keynote: Ethics, Capacity, and Autonomy

This highly interactive case-based discussion will provide attendees with pragmatic tools for analyzing and resolving ethical issues involving individuals with diminished capacity. We will consider the autonomy rights of individuals to make sub-optimal choices and define the situations in which staff may ethically intervene to prevent harm to self or others.

Objectives:

  1. examine the concept of individual autonomy specifically as it relates to the capacity to make complex and risky healthcare decisions.
  2. To investigate the ethical justification for interventions over an individual’s objections.
  3. To provide an ethical framework for adjudicating disagreements among providers, recipients of care, and families.
