2025 Annual Conference + EXPO
Ripples of Impact

Thank you to all of the attendees, speakers, exhibitors and volunteers (340 in total, a LeadingAge Maryland record) who helped us to make Ripples of Impact this year!

Here are three key takeaways for you:

As a leader, small actions can make large impacts. In line with our conference theme, several of our keynote speakers noted the small actions we can take to invest in others as leaders, and the importance of mentoring. LeadingAge Board Chair, Roberto Muniz, spoke about the volunteer coordinator and managers early in his career who encouraged him to apply to college after his school guidance counselor had told him he was not college bound. These mentors drove him to the admissions event and paid his $29 application fee, as Roberto had no other means of making this happen. These practical actions helped Roberto secure a spot at Rutgers University and launch his career into motion.

Civility is all about self-reflection and managing our own “stuff”. Model what you wish to see. We had the pleasure of hearing from Nzinga “Zing” Shaw during dinner and conversation on Tuesday, and a subsequent keynote and breakout session on Wednesday. What sticks with me were Zing’s answer to some questions Tuesday night around “how do we make the world more civil?” Her answers all came back to how WE each respond and interact with those around us. We cannot force anyone to be kind or civil, and there are many reasons why someone might behave the way they do that we may never understand. However, we can take responsibility, model civility at work, home, and our communities, and courageously address incivility when we see it.

We are in a unique moment in time where creativity is not a nice to have, but a must have. Potential cuts to funding that our organizations rely on, state budget challenges, and broad regulatory and policy shifts are creating a “call to action” for the entire healthcare, housing, and broader aging services ecosystem. We also heard from the Maryland Department of Aging and the Department of Housing and Community Development about the small changes to policy that could potentially create large positive changes in our communities, and also the importance of clear and specific advocacy when we go to legislators and state agencies with concerns or solutions.
